Munich: the heart of European climate & ICT research
The city of Munich is now at the heart of European research on climate issues and ICT.
 Thanks to its expertise in matters of electromobility, high energy efficiency construction and eco-climatology, the Technical University of Munich will participate in 2 Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KIC) that form part of the newly created European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT): climate and ICT. The EIT is a new independent community body which was set up to address Europe’s innovation gap.
The University of Munich participates in two new European innovation and research projects with a budget of close to 100 million EUR each. This gives it a strategic role in the development of climate protection and the future of information technologies. The Knowledge and Innovation Communities, created by the EIT, are a long-term financing scheme for innovation, with funds coming from the industry (around 600 million euros per KIC) and the European Union (around 120 million euros). The money will be spread over a period of 7 years.
Within the KIC-climate, the Technical University of Munich will cooperate with public and private partners to work on issues such as the research for new solutions on emissions reductions in cities or the control of vegetation in order to improve the climate.
