Resilient cities #2: Bristol, Toronto and El Hierro aim for self sufficiency

According to the World Health Organisation, "resilient and empowered communities respond proactively to new or adverse situa- tions, prepare for economic, social and environmental change and cope better with crisis and hardship." At a time when "crisis" and "hardship" have probably become the most frequently used words in our daily news, community resilience seems to be the bright light at the end of the tunnel.

Lausanne explores the geothermal option for its 2000-watt eco-disctrict

As one of the main axes of Lausanne's large urban-planning project called Métamorphose, the Plaines-du-Loup eco-district, the construction of which is due to start in 2017 on a 34-hectare area, will have to comply with the requirements set in the energy concept "2000-watt society". The eco-district will have to guarantee a low energy consumption and to give priority to renewable energy sources.

Växjö urges Swedish Government to become the world’s first fossil-fuel free nation

While the EU's position on a goal for the Paris Climate Talks in December is still up for discussion, the Swedish city of Växjö is pushing for more: today, Mayor Bo Frank has issued a declaration urging the Swedish Government and European local authorities to follow in Växjö's footsteps and take meaningful action for going fossil fuel-free.

Frankfurt-am-Main: Germany's economic capital city aims at a 95% CO2-emission reduction by 2050

Frankfurt-am-Main is considered a leading city at global level from its economic power and cultural richness. EU's 3rd business city has also been an energy transition pioneer for a long time. It has proved it once again by setting itself the objective of reducing its CO2 emissions by 95% by 2050 (baseline year 1990).

Liège, partner city of the new Smart City Institute
