Setting the scene: The European Parliament’s debate on energy security

At the end of 2014, the European Parliament published a report on the European Energy Security Strategy focusing on diversifying import routes for fossil fuels. It however seemed to miss out the importance of reducing energy demand and accelerating the deployment of local renewable energy sources. Instead it focuses on unconventional hydrocarbon and nuclear energy. The report was adopted by the ITRE committee (in charge of energy issues in the European Parliament) on 11 May. Fortunately it was significantly amended in a more positive direction.

Juncker Plan: European Parliament decides to support local energy efficiency projects!

This was a great week for energy efficiency in the European Parliament. The ITRE committee (Industry, Research and Energy) voted the ring-fencing of EUR 5 billion (among the EUR 21 billion of EU guarantees) in the European Fund for Strategic Investment (EFSI) to fund energy efficiency projects.

Energy Union – It can’t work without cities and citizens

‘Cities are key to the establishment of the Energy Union project’ said Commission Vice President Maroš Šefčovič yesterday at a high-level roundtable which gathered some 20 leaders of European cities. Cities are the largest consumers of energy in Europe, and where three quarters of carbon emissions are generated. A successful EU Energy Union must tap into the potential of local energy resources and actively involve local authorities and their citizens.

The « Energy Union » should be grounded in today’s reality

An "Energy Union" is the European Commission's next big project. Whom and what will it unify? And what type of energy is it focusing on? Better interconnections throughout the EU and simplification of energy trade amongst countries are meant to reduce the EU's dependence on Russian gas. This will increase security of supply and competitiveness. No mention of decentralised energy, though. Energy Cities' most recent position paper calls for the assessment of local needs and opportunities in this endeavour.
