Covenant of Mayors: A key instrument for the future EU budget

In its 10 year-existence, the European Covenant of Mayors has mobilised thousands of local governments to voluntarily implement and exceed EU climate and energy objectives. In order to further embed the initiative in EU policies, it has to become a key instrument for the future EU budget, write the local and regional leaders of the European Covenant of Mayors board.

Energy Cities President meets Members of European Parliament to discuss role of cities in EU Energy Union governance

On July 6th, on the occasion of the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg, Energy Cities’ President and Lord Mayor of Heidelberg, Eckart Würzner, compared notes with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) on the role local authorities should play in the governance of the EU Energy Union, a key legislative proposal currently under discussion in the EU institutions.

The efforts made by cities to boost local energy production and renewables are essential on the path towards a sustainable energy future. Energy Cities’ members take bold action in that sense, namely in the framework of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy. According to a recent evaluation of their performance in the initiative, the cities have made substantial progress in upscaling local energy and renewables and are an example to follow in terms of CO2 reduction commitments.

In the aftermath of the UN climate conference in Paris, we are proud to show that Energy Cities’ members are at the forefront of climate action. An evaluation of their performance in the Covenant of Mayors at the end of last year proved that they have managed to exceed EU ambitions in terms of CO2-emission reduction and energy efficiency, ahead of the 2020 benchmark.

New Covenant of Mayors was officially launched and endorsed on the occasion of the Joint Covenant of Mayors & Mayors Adapt Ceremony held on 15 October 2015 in Brussels. The cities shall now commit to the European Union’s 2030 CO2 target : a 40% emission reduction by 2030. Moreover, climate mitigation and adaptation have been integrated into one single initiative.
